Amihai Mazar was born in Haifa in 1942. He studied archaeology and ancient history at'the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (B.A., 1967; M.A., 1972; Ph.D., 1976), and since 1971 has taught archaeology of the Old Testament period at the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (present rank: Senior Lecturer). He also has taught at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheba, the Department of Oriental Studies at the University of Pennsylvania (fall 1986), and the American Institute of Holy Land Studies (Jerusalem). He studied in the Institute of Archaeology at the University of London (1979). His main subjects of research are the Philistine culture; the Israelite settlement; the culture of Judah and Philistia during the Iron Age II; and Canaanite culture.
Dr. Mazar has directed archaeological excavations at Tel Qasile (1971-74, 1982-87), Giloh (near Jerusalem), and other sites. He has been Field Director at Tel Batash (biblical Timnah) since 1977 and Hartuv, and has also surveyed the Jerusalem Aqueducts (1968).
He currently delivers public lectures in various meetings and universities in Israel and abroad. His publications include two books and numerous articles in scientific journals.
Amihai Mazar resides in Jerusalem with his wife Ora (Pizanti) and three children.
