Question:
How old was a jewish boy in bible times before he could possibly join their army or sent to war?
Lisa
Answer:
Dear Lisa,

That is an interesting question. There is nothing to my knowledge that addresses that particular question, as circumstance would dictate how old a young man had to be before he could take up arms. Some, no doubt, did so at a very early age; however, we do have specifically mentioned in the Mishnah, Order Nezikin, Chapter Avoth 5 and 21 --
At 5 years of age one is ready for study of scripture; at 10 for the study of Mishnah; at 13 for Bar Mitzvah, at 15 for study of Talmud; at 18 for marriage; at 20 for pursuing a vocation; at 30 for entering into one's full vigor; at 40 for understanding; at 50 for counsel; at 60 one attains old age; at 70 for the gray hair; at 80 for special strength and at 90 for bending beneath the weight of old age and at 100 as if he had already died.
