Question:
I have gone to church and worshiped for most of my life even though I can put more effort into studying the bible. I am trying to grow my relationship with the Lord and I am going through a divorce and I was speaking with someone and for the first time in my life I hear that you are not supposed to remarry after divorcing unless your spouse passes away. I started looking up scriptures and made some phone calls but am trying to do some extensive research. My thought was if there was adultery involved then it was ok to remarry. Is it ok to remarry?
Chris,
Answer:
Dear Chris,
To be real honest with you, it depends upon the person with whom you are discussing the question as to the answer that you will get. In many fundamental Christian circles, the answer you get will be "no, except for the case of adultery."

The problem is that the Jewish and/or Biblical perspective on the subject is quite different. The fact is that there are many reasons specified in Jewish Law as to why a man could put away his wife or why the wife could put away her husband. Without going into an inordinate amount of detail, the simple answer to your question is, "yes, you are free to remarry," and I say that regardless of what the circumstances might have been and do not let anybody put you into bondage over this issue. It happens to be one of the most misunderstood subjects in Christendom.
Best wishes,
